Google Adds Identity Support for Office 365, Facebook at Work
Google is expanding its single sign-on (SSO) capability within the Google Identity platform to include pre-configured support for a couple of third-party software behemoths: Microsoft Office 365 and Facebook at Work.
Google Identity also now supports Panorama9, New Relic, Concur, Coupa, Box, Slack and more—in addition to logins for hundreds of apps in the Google Apps Marketplace.
The Google Identity platform, which comprises a number of solutions including Google Sign-In, is part of the Google Apps for Work suite. It offers core identity services in an effort to make it simple, secure and reliable for users to log in across apps, and for administrators to manage usage across their organizations in a centralized way. These core features fall into six main areas: single sign-on (SSO); multifactor authentication; provisioning; directory administration; endpoint management; and reporting and analytics.
Google is interested in bolstering mobile security in particular, using Identity in conjunction with hardware-based measures like biometric sensors, and software such as Google's Smart Lock. When combined with Google Apps enterprise mobile management, Identity allows administrators to access controls like password strength, lock screen requirements and app management
“Millions of businesses rely on Google to protect employee logins to Google Apps services like Drive and Gmail,” the company said in a blog announcing the new support. “And we continue to make it easier to extend that ease and security to more applications with Google Identity, providing organizations a single place to manage identity and security for all of their SaaS/IT applications.”
All Google accounts are protected by advanced risk-based authentication, and users can also enable Google two-step verification.
“However hackers are getting even more sophisticated and are starting to use phishing techniques to get around multi-factor authentication. For even more protection employees can leverage Google’s Security Key support which provides industry leading account security,” the company said. “If as an administrator you want to require these added security features, you can purchase Google Apps for Work Unlimited."
